Description

We use the term ‘Rover’ diff for all diffs fitted to the Landrover 90, 110 front diff, Discovery 1 and Discovery 2 diffs, also known as ‘long nose’ diffs.

When we rebuild a diff they all have four new taper roller bearings, new oil seal and all have a new drive flange, the ring and pinions are inspected for wear and damage and if they pass they are reused if not, new are fitted.

We only use quality parts, the new bearings are all Timken brand and the oil seals are made by Corteco.

The rover type diff comes in 10 or 24 spline, 3 or 4 bolt drive flange, the 3 bolt flange model was used on the later RRC and D1 rear and all D2 rears, 3.54 ratio and imperial or metric, please specify either the landrover part number or vehicle type and year when ordering.

Please see a video we have created explaining ‘Diff Pegging’

If you would like a heavy duty ring and pinion, see more details here.

For the Series Vehicle

Due to the poor quality of the Aftermarket Series Ring and Pinions we fit our Series diffs with our HD 4.75 Rear Ring and Pinion. If you are just replacing one diff this will result in a very slight difference between your two diffs. This is not a problem unless you are in 4 wheel drive on a high traction surface ie on the road which you shouldnt be really.

Please note that Series Vehicle and Range Rover Classic vehicles, pre 1983,  have oil filler plugs in the diff housing, rather than the axle housing.  If you need a oil filler plug on your rebuilt diff please make us aware of this in comments box that will arise during the order process.

Core Deposit

Many of our products are sold on an exchange basis. This is an amount charged on top of the unit price which acts as a deposit and is refundable on receipt of the exchange unit (old one coming out of the vehicle), as long as the unit is the same type, complete and not stripped, and returned within 12 months.

This means it has to be like for like as it comes out of the vehicle, having not been taken apart at all, and needs to be complete with everything the remanufactured one arrives with. If it does not arrive in this condition, some or all of the surcharge may not be refunded. A standard “stripped” charge of £75 will be deducted from any core return.

Core returned after a 12 month period will be subject to a surcharge as shown below.

The core deposit varies depending on the product.

FAQs

What are the torque settings for :

10 x Crown Wheel Bolts – 60Nm

4 x Journal End Cap Bolts – 90Nm

1 x Pinion Bolt – 100Nm

1 x Rover Pinion Nut – 129Nm

1 x P38 Nut – 135Nm

Is my Rover diff Metric or Imperial ?

The diffs changed from imperial to metric in about 1983, the way of telling which you have is if you have a look on the head of one of the 4 journal end cap bolts and if you have ‘8.8’ written on the head it’s metric.

I have a 110 and want to know if the rear axle is a Salisbury type or the later P38/Wolfe type ?

They changed from the Salisbury to the P38 type is approx 2002, when standing behind the vehicle looking at the rear face of the rear axle the Salisbury has a pressed steel cover plate with about 10 bolts holding it on and is much larger than the Rover axle.

I want to fit the Heavy Duty 3.5 ratio ring and pinion in the rear axle but leave the 3.54 in the front, will this be OK ?

There will be a ratio difference but it is quite small, with the centre diff locked on a low traction surface this will be OK as occasionally one wheel may slip to stop the driveline ‘winding up’. When on road with the centre diff unlocked, the centre diff will turn slowly to allow for the ratio difference, this slow turning will not wear the diff excessively. The only instance where this ratio difference could cause a problem would be if you were on the road or on a high traction surface with the centre diff locked which of course you should not be.

Technical

Please note the early Range Rover (upto about 1983) 10 spline diff had the oil filler plug in the diff as opposed to in the axle housing like the later vehicles, if you need this early type please be sure to mention this when ordering.

The stock diffs are not particulaly strong if you are a regular off roader, the usual failure mode for these 2-pin diffs is friction welding of the 2 small sun gears to the cross pin resulting in the pin shearing and instant failure, this process happens very quickly when wheel spinning.

If you find you are breaking the stock diffs regulaly I would suggest looking at either the 4-pin diff or a limited slip or locking type.

If you are unsure if you have metric or imperial diffs note that the diffs changed from imperial to metric in about 1983, the way of telling which you have is if you have a look on the head of one of the 4 journal end cap bolts and if you have ‘8.8’ written on the head it’s metric.

With a customer after a trick diff for the rear of his land rover discovery 2 based axle, for serious competition use , I arranged and ordered exactly what was was required , correct rotation cut teeth HD crown wheel and pinion , with Ashcroft’s own 4 pinion 24 spline planet centre,
along with having it pegged / slipper pad set up , with correct 4 bolt drive flange to match prop shaft,
the Ashcroft team got it all sorted and was all ready in good time ,
fitted straight in vehicle, and currently being used in the vehicle powered by BMW M57 3 Litre Diesel, Comp safari , team recovery and Trials etc ,
Thank you team, a company who is heading to 40 years of experience in this sort of work ,
    Highly recommended

I have a 90 Truck cab and ordered a complete front diff with pegged housing, air locker and ratio change to HD 4.12 ring & pinion to match the rear Ashcroft locker with pegged housing which I purchased/fitted a couple of years ago and has experienced a lot of extreme off road use working faultlessly.
I sent the rear diff down to have the same heavy duty 4.12 ratios fitted to suit my bigger wheels, gearing is perfect now.
Top quality fast service all round. I’d highly recommend Ashcroft.

The rear diff on my 1954 Series 1 was really slack after 70 years and needed a rebuild. Normally I would have rebuilt it myself, but after my transferbox failed and I rebuilt with the Ashcroft high range gears I was happy to go with their diff. The unit went in pretty easily, although I had to remove the two locating pins from the axle body as there were no holes in the Ashcroft diff. So no everything is really smooth, no clunk as you engage gears as there is no backlash, it feels like a new car. Thanks!

I drive a Defender 110 and I ordered a differential for the front axle with an AATB diff centre. Ashcroft provides great delivery support, that even customs between Europe and the UK couldn’t thwart, and I got my parts in a timely fashion. Thanks for that. The diff itself is a dream. The AATB makes steering left or right a little heavier, but brings you back to dead centre, making the return a little lighter. As with the AATB in the rear axle, the vehicle feels a tinier bit more ‘sporty’, which is an odd word to use in combination with Defender.

Great fun to drive – on and off road. Can definitely recommend.

The diff was for a Lightweight Land Rover. Very good quality and no issues fitting to Land Rover. Ashcroft were great to deal with following phone call. Diff arrived on time and was well packaged. Was easy to return my old diff to Ashcroft via the approved courier and holding deposit was returned very quickly. New diff is excellent and very quiet. Highly recommend Ashcroft for their quality service and products.

With a 49 year old Rover P5b in desperate need of a new differential I was worried as to the availability of a compatible replacement. I need not have worried. Ashcroft were able to supply the almost identical differential for the Range Rover Classic from the same era, with Dave Ashcroft arranging a modification to the casing to facilitate rear axle oil fill from the differential (no filling from the rear axle on my model). The website is easy to use and the admin team of Hosanna, Sophie, and Molly provide top quality service with support throughout and the refund for my returned original differential processed within minutes of receipt. Top quality service from start to finish and the replacement differential is silent and clunk free. Could not have hoped for better. Highly recommended.
